Hurricane Beryl Continues to Impact Texas Logistics Operations

Wednesday, Jul 10, 2024

Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday morning, bringing substantial rain, flooding and 94 mph winds that knocked out power to more than 2.5 million homes and businesses in southeast Texas.

The Ports of Galveston and Freeport closed as of 11 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, while Freeport could reopen sometime Today.

“The Coast Guard is expected to lift port condition ‘Zulu’ for the ports of Houston, Galveston, Freeport and Texas City on Tuesday,” Port Freeport said in a statement.

The Port of Corpus Christi, about 200 miles south of Houston along the Texas coast, said the Coast Guard had rescinded port condition Zulu for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, the La Quinta Channel and the Intracoastal Waterway from Rockport all the way south to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Maersk said in a statement that a number of its Houston-based facilities and teams have been impacted by power loss, and that some of  local trucking operations facilities are without power as well but expect to resume operations once the Houston terminal gates open.

“Beryl is a resilient storm, and it poses a serious threat for Texans in its path at landfall and the following 24 hours as it moves through Texas. The storm’s predicted path is shifting east, and the areas east of the I-35 corridor are expected to bear the brunt of the inclement weather. Residents sheltering in place should take precautions right away for sustained wind, heavy rain, flooding, storm surges on the coast, and possible tornados.”– Dan Patrick, Acting Governor, Texas.
