Cimcorp and REWE Automate Fresh Produce Logistics Across Berlin

Cimcorp has deployed an advanced automated logistics solution for REWE at the retailer’s new fresh produce fulfillment center in Oranienburg, Germany modernizing the flow of fruit and vegetables to hundreds of stores across the greater Berlin market.
The automated facility supports distribution to more than 370 supermarkets and 580 retail shops, handling approximately 29,000 units per day. Designed to meet the tight time constraints of fresh food logistics, the system integrates robotics, conveyor technology and warehouse control software to streamline inbound processing, order picking and outbound shipping.
“In fresh food logistics, every minute counts and every delivery is critical,” said Matthias Menzel, general manager of REWE’s Oranienburg logistics center. He noted that missing delivery windows can result in significant financial losses, driving the retailer’s investment in automation focused on reliability and real-time operational visibility.
At the core of the installation is Cimcorp’s Warehouse Control System (WCS), which oversees barcode scanning, depalletizing, inventory management, order picking and outbound labeling. The system is designed to maximize transparency and uptime, with dashboard tools that provide operators with end-to-end visibility and rapid error response capabilities.
The automated picking area operates on both FIFO (First In, First Out) and FEFO (First Expired, First Out) principles to ensure product freshness. Advanced workload balancing and stacking processes account for both product characteristics and ergonomic considerations. Each crate, stack and pallet is uniquely identified and tracked from arrival to shipment, supporting full traceability. Redundant robot cells and transfer cars are built into the design to maintain operations in the event of equipment disruptions.
Beyond throughput and accuracy gains, the automation initiative addresses mounting labor pressures in warehouse environments. Menzel said physically demanding tasks—particularly heavy lifting associated with produce handling—have become increasingly difficult to staff.
By reducing manual strain, the system allows employees to shift toward less physically taxing and more technology-driven roles, supporting workplace safety and long-term workforce sustainability.
The Oranienburg project represents a key milestone in REWE’s broader logistics modernization strategy. According to Riku Puska, sales manager at Cimcorp Group, the solution was developed in close collaboration with the retailer to integrate seamlessly into existing operations while providing ongoing service and training support.
As fresh food supply chains face rising expectations for speed, accuracy and resilience, the automated facility positions REWE to strengthen year-round product availability in one of Europe’s most competitive grocery markets.
